| When your physician takes a tissue biopsy, the tissue will be sent to our laboratory, Ketchum, Wood & Burgert Pathology Associates, for examination by a physician specialist, called a Pathologist. The Pathologist is one who specializes in diagnosing disease by tissue examination. After a review of the removed tissue, a technologist will cut all, or parts, of the tissue specimen into 'thinner-than-paper' (thousandths of a millimeter) slices that can be colorized, placed between thin pieces of glass (a slide) and viewed through a microscope. Throughout this process, careful attention is given to maintaining proper identification of the tissue specimen. After the Pathologist has reviewed the tissue specimen through a microscope, a report of the Pathologist’s findings and diagnosis is sent to your physician. This whole process is usually completed within 24 to 48 hours. Under certain circumstances, difficult or unusual cases are examined by several of our Pathologists. Very unusual cases may be sent to a national expert. Our Pathologist will keep your physician informed of any special circumstances related to your tissue specimen or case. The Ketchum, Wood & Burgert Pathology Associates report will assist your physician in confirming a diagnosis and selecting appropriate therapy or treatment. Please contact your physician if you have any questions about your Ketchum, Wood & Burgert Pathology Associates report. |
